Happy October 29 Republic Day.

🇹🇷 Is October 29, Republic Day, a Cliche?

“O rising new generation! The future is yours.
We founded the Republic; it is you who will preserve it and elevate it.”

Mustafa Kemal Atatürk

Hello, my dear friend. I know how much you enjoy the long messages I write to you. When I write them, I feel as if you’re right in front of me, and I truly love that feeling. I personally read every reply I receive, and they make me very happy. Will you write to me too? :)

Yes, enough time has passed; I’ve gathered many memories and experiences. I’ll tell you about them I promise. But not today.

Because today there is something far more important.
Today is a holiday.
Today is October 29.

October 29 may feel like a cliche to you. At school, every year, the same routine speeches about the meaning and importance of the day may be read aloud from memory. I can’t say you’re wrong about that. It’s the same with many things we grow accustomed to; what becomes ordinary feels unremarkable to the ordinary person.

For example, when you go home and see your father sitting on the couch, you don’t say, “How wonderful my father is alive.” Because for you, that is normal and ordinary. But what if you came home with a friend who has no father? How do you think he would feel when he saw your father? What would go through his mind? You’ve never lost your father; that’s why you can’t fully understand.

Right now, I’m in my study in the wooden attic. In dim light, listening to music, I’m focusing my thoughts and writing these lines to you. Do you know which song was playing when I reached this point? Very interestingly: “Adieu mon pays.”

Why Does October 29 Republic Day Feel Like a Cliche?

You might say, “What’s this, man are you showing off your French now?”
I don’t speak French at all :)
But I do know the story and the lyrics of this song and I must tell you. Right here. Right now.
“In a Republic Day message, really?”
Yes, my dear friend right here, at this very moment.

An Algerian forced to leave his homeland composes this song on the deck of a ship, as it departs the harbor…

“Adieu mon pays.” (Farewell, my country.)

And the song begins like this:

J’ai quitté mon pays,
I left my homeland,
j’ai quitté ma maison,
I left my home…

J’ai quitté mon soleil,
I left my sun…
j’ai quitté ma mer bleue,
I left my blue sea…

Enrico Macias – Algeria / France, 1961

That is why if there had been no Republic we would have been both orphaned and fatherless.

That is why the Republic is the father of the orphaned and the mother of those left without parents.

I love you very much. ❤️
I am certain that you will forever, always, protect the independence of this country and its Republic.
. 🇹🇷 ❤️

“My humble body will one day surely turn to dust.
But the Republic of Turkey will live on forever.”

Mustafa Kemal Atatürk – İzmir, 1926

I’ve placed the Turkish-subtitled version of the song at the very end of the message. ;)
