Mayhem Brawler 2 Development Indefinitely Halted

One of the studios that come to mind when thinking about independent game development in Turkey, Hero Concept, made headlines with a statement that saddened its fans. The studio announced that the development of Mayhem Brawler 2: Best of Both Worlds, which had been in development for a long time, has been indefinitely halted. The main reason for the decision was the deepening financial difficulties and sustainability issues in the gaming industry.

The first Mayhem Brawler game, which combined the 1990s arcade hall atmosphere with modern gameplay mechanics, achieved significant success both domestically and internationally. Following this success, the highly anticipated sequel unfortunately did not progress as planned.

Hero Concept’s founder Serkan Özay emphasized in his statement about the project that the decision was not an easy one. According to Özay, Mayhem Brawler 2 was not just a game for the team; it represented a lot of effort, time, and financial sacrifice. However, it was stated that continuing the project under the current conditions was no longer possible.

Özay noted that the team made serious sacrifices during the development process but at this point, financially, they had "hit a wall of reality." Nevertheless, he stressed that the project has not been completely shelved.

According to information shared by the studio, problems became noticeable in the first quarter of 2024. Two different institutions with which Hero Concept had agreements for investment were unable to complete their internal processes, so the planned funding could not be realized. This development directly affected the course of the project.

The team then turned to conversations with alternative publishers but faced a very cautious approach due to the overall stagnation in the industry. Increased costs, shrinking budgets, and risk-averse investors made the process even more difficult.

To overcome the financial bottleneck, Hero Concept launched a Kickstarter campaign in the first quarter of 2025. Thanks to support from the community, the development of Mayhem Brawler 2 continued for a while longer. Serkan Özay thanked everyone who contributed to the campaign.

However, this support was not sufficient for the project to be sustainable in the long term. The contraction in the global gaming industry was one of the factors that directly affected Hero Concept.

In recent years, there has been a significant contraction in the gaming industry worldwide. Many companies, from large studios to independent developers, have been in the news due to consecutive layoffs and budget cuts. The more cautious approach of financial sources towards the industry makes launching new projects more difficult.

The process experienced by Hero Concept is no exception to this global picture. Serkan Özay emphasizes that the challenges they face are not an individual failure but a reflection of the industry's overall condition.

According to the studio's current statement, it is unlikely that Mayhem Brawler 2: Best of Both Worlds will enter an active development phase again before 2027. The team and financial resources are significantly diminished.

However, Hero Concept will not fall into complete silence. The studio aims to stay afloat and showcase its creative vision by working on some licensed and original projects funded by publishers. It is also shared that negotiations for several projects are currently ongoing.

The indefinite halt of Mayhem Brawler 2 once again highlights the challenges faced by independent game developers in Turkey. Creative ideas and technical skills alone are not enough; sustainable financing models and industry support have become more critical than ever.
